You'll have a much easier time fixing it than I did then!

As for the lever, it simply rocks back down beside the machine, and presses against the side next to the platen knob. Not very ingenious, but that's just how they worked. IF you are finding your one catching, push the lever backwards (against the spring) and roll it past the metal piece that catches it. This must be the Achilles heel for this machine, but they probably weren't designed with 80 years of service in mind.Dwayne F.https://www.blogger.com/profile/07032059161503386028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2120715572940256008.post-63598520606589904512013-04-24T16:56:05.176-07:002013-04-24T16:56:05.176-07:00Wait a second -- is the screw that's holding t...Wait a second -- is the screw that's holding the lever in place on the *front* of your machine? If so, no wonder you had such a time removing it! On the Underwood, it comes in from the back of the machine. The carriage-release lever is slightly in the way, but it's not too bad. I may even have an offset screwdriver that I can fit into there.

Now the big question: how does the lever fold on this machine? I don't think I've ever seen one intact with the lever stowed.mpclemenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12807147515549175803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2120715572940256008.post-48407725488810659862013-04-23T18:34:17.687-07:002013-04-23T18:34:17.687-07:00I'll tell all about the rubber soon.and you ar...I'll tell all about the rubber soon.and you are right, sometimes just ploughing through will get you there. I drilled a hole in the side perpendicular to the original hole and threaded fishing line through it. I've been meaning to post on it, but that was weeks ago. Maybe in a few months I'll get to it.

Quite a nice job on the rollers. That is my next project. There's always that dilemma: ...Nice work Scott! There's always that dilemma: to bungle on down a possibly blind alley, or to put it back in the box and wait for an epiphany. On the one hand, what's to lose by badgering a problem? You can (nearly) always find another machine for parts - or vice versa - if you screw the thing up beyond redemption. Then again, just like getting a crossword clue, returning to a problem put on the back burner with fresh eyes and a dose of serendipity is a lot more satisfying. Looking forward to your rubber revelations!Rob Bowkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065940710708289511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2120715572940256008.post-12278660246911025362013-04-23T09:17:30.401-07:002013-04-23T09:17:30.401-07:00Bookmarking, starring, and committing this post to...Bookmarking, starring, and committing this post to memory.

My replacement lever should be shipping in the next day or so -- it's not making a trans-oceanic journey, so the cost is more manageable: only a bit more than I paid for the whole machine.

Notch in the drum? Brilliant. I'll don the goggles and fire up the Dremel. Better than my homemade hook idea, which was going to be chancy at best with the narrow clearances.mpclemenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12807147515549175803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2120715572940256008.post-72452493595902017442013-04-23T07:29:36.750-07:002013-04-23T07:29:36.750-07:00Impressive.
