Congratulations on your great find! Isn't it wonderful when you get a Hermes 3000 at a good price and open it to find it turns out to be a script machine? You've got all the neat extras too.I was very pleasantly surprised at my last Hermes 3000 find when I put it on the workbench to test before doing anything with it, and I found it to be a script machine. For me I think it was Hermes way of telling me not to use the machine for a parts machine.
I think you're right. I was kinda miffed about how I missed that at the shop. But I just felt compelled to grab this machine anyway. At $18, I couldn't really go wrong anyway. And I was so very excited to find the script typeface under the hood. One of my best finds to date I think. And the first time I've actually found a machine at the Thrift shop!
wow, great find. If that's the Lifeline in Windsor, I've been there many times and never found a typer. And double-plus bonus on the script. How's the platen?rino
Sure was that one. This is the first I've seen there too.The platen is alright. Not brilliant, but it isn't the worst i've seen.
The typewriter gods have spoken, you lucky gentleman.
Ha ha ha. Well... All I need to find now, is an Epocs Hermes!
Congrats, Scott! Would have been a bargain at twice the price.
For sure! And it types great too! Was definitely my lucky day.
Excellent! You bought yourself a time capsule and you're becoming a connoisseur of H3Ks.Drier than a prohibitionist -- I'll have to remember that one!
By the way, the alignment on your cursive Hermes looks perfect. In my experience this is the very strongest point of the marque.
For sure. It didn't seem allot good at first, but I got some lube between the bearings on the rails, and cleaned out some gunk - and it started typing wonderfully. As for my little one-liner.. I originally considered using a very crass Australianism, but I changed my mind and come up with that as a substitute.
Awesome find, Scott! The script typeface looks like my Hermes Media 3's.
I'd imagine so! I guess they didn't change the machines much over the years.
That's a very cool coincidence with my own Hermes 3000 day post. I love finding the time capsule stuff inside - and good paper!.We'll expect to see more script posts.
I got a bit of a chuckle when I saw yours. You posted about the same time as me, but for some reason I couldn't reply to your post on your page. It keeps coming up with a blank reply square (no buttons). I might give it a try now. I love finding this kind of stuff. It is wonderful when you see little pieces of people's lives. And for sure... I'll have to do some more blogging with it!
Good thing the Universe stepped in to make sure you came home with that wonderful typewriter! This script typeface is my new favorite. I like all script fonts, but the one on your Hermes 3000 is incredibly clear and elegant. Great score!
It was a surprisingly beautiful typeface. I have three script machines now, and this one would have to be my favorite. I guess I'd better use this guy for my next letter!
Excellent score! You may have been inobservant at the store, but your hand knew what it was doing! (:
Ha ha ha. My hands just love getting all over typewriters. I got some very odd looks from people around the store though, as I walked about.
Lucky bugger! Hope this teaches you never to resist when the call is strong.
For sure. It also teaches me to have a closer and more considered look when I stick my head into a new typewriter. And to wear my glasses...
I can't tell you how many times that hand of mine has gotten stuck in exactly the same way. Something overrides the logic center of my brain via my wallet, and... presto... one more machine on the shelf. I'm tickled to see such a great find come from such a terrible affliction.
I think it is called 'typosphere syndrome'.
Thank you for sharing this interesting and inspiring piece on the Hermes 3000 that refused to let go of you. Reading it made me smile. I'm not new to typewriting but am definitely a newbie in the Typewriter Collectors' world, and I hope to get as lucky as you did...someday soon. Love the font on your Hermes, by the way :)
Thanks for that! They're out there. And beautiful.
Amazing find. As long as this type of thing happens once in a blue moon, it keeps hope alive and we continue to hunt with the same fervor
